When they found out the news, they tried to save money by having just one meal a day. Although this solution came about due to desperate circumstances, it’s not sustainable, especially for thewoman.

The main reason why the wife keeps reaching for her husband’s food is because she needs a lot more calories than she’d normally ever eat. Pregnant women need around 300 extra. Since this lady is in her third trimester, she may need to eat approximately 2,400 calories each day, which definitely isn’t going to come from just one meal.

As people stated in the comments, a pregnant woman doesn’t just need any food, she needs specific vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are necessary for the baby’s growth. Adoesn’t just put her own health at stake, but also her baby’s. Malnourishment can also unfortunately cause severe complications in pregnancy.

I understand that the pregnancy was not planned, but how do they think they will be able to afford to raise a child if they don’t have money for more than one meal a day ? I mean, OP said that they eat this little cause they are putting money on the side, but still, how do they think they can afford a child ?

Making your pregnant wife eat only one meal a day so you can put money aside is abusive.

And not eating a whole meal a day yourself is any better? Come on, the guy isn’t to blame here. This entire endeavor is screwed. I can well imagine how hard that is, but it’d have been the best decision to get an abortion in this case I believe. They don’t have the money to raise a child adequately, neither the time.

They might live in a “Handmaid’s Tale” state and abortion, no matter how badly needed in this poverty situation, may not have been available to them.

I think it’s more of a shared decision, they are both abusive toward their baby who will be the one being born malnourished.

@ Ellinor, if I remember correctly during pregnancies the baby gets all the nutritions it needs from the mother. However if the mother is malnourished the body of the mother will be used for feeding the baby. That means fat, muscles, everything will be repurposed to feed the baby. I think there was a study in Africa sometime back on how the babies of malnourished mothers got born “normal” and starved only after they were born. The body will literally eat itself up to provide for the baby. 😢 edit: which is probably why mom is so ravenous. The food barely is enough for her so her body is declining so the baby won’t suffer. If they keep this up the mom will start to loose her teeth…

If the woman is so ridiculously malnourished, the baby could still be born with neural tube defects from folic acid deficiencies, and the baby can still be born underweight if the mother can’t gain weight due to starvation..

I’m not sure about that. His reddit title is quite abusive and has been watered down for BP. He asked whether he was an AH for telling her to stop f*****g grabbing food off his plate. Here is a man who has abused his hungry pregnant wife. I’d put money on the decision to save money not being mutual. I dont know any woman who would starve themselves and risk the life of their child for the sake of saving money.

Her survival instincts are kicking in because her baby isn’t getting enough nutrition. There are food banks, government assistance, churches, charities and she how pregnant now!? This should have been figured out a long time ago. There may already be damage done. What exactly is he putting money aside for when food and water is the very first necessity you need to survive?

The whole situation made me cross, but there’s two key points I really disliked. That it ‘she got pregnant accidentally’, and ‘her contraception failed’. This just feels like he is trying to move the blame onto her, when it takes two to make a baby, accidentally, or not.

They’ré clearly saving money by avoiding seeing a doctor during all this! A doctor woulda told them how imperative it is that she eats wheelbarrows full of food! I’m scared they’re gonna have a sickly baby they can’t afford to care for and this is gonna spiral into something truly awful. I worry for this child, it’s parents have no problem solving skills. It’s not going to get less expensive to survive with a child. What are you doing keeping it? You aren’t trying foodbanks, or pregnancy/infant support programs. If this is US based WIC is a federal program that offers food and necessity support for women and kids (through 5 years), but most countries have similar programs. You aren’t looking to move to cheaper accomodation, getting a roommate etc. Youre planning on bringing a child into a family that can’t feed the current members. You’re already fighting about food and you’re not even up every two hours with a hungry infant. It’s abusive to keep this child if you can solve this. Hunger ruins every aspect of life and hunger during early years sets the child up for health and intellectual consequences that are life long. Don’t doom your child. If you can’t at the least provide basic nutrition, give the baby up for adoption.

Completely agree with you. I’m feeding my brand new baby as I read this post and can’t believe them. They have had time. She will be around 30 weeks pregnant so will have had about 24 weeks of knowing. Yet they haven’t asked family for help, sold household items, looked at extra work she could do from home safely, looked up what resources they could access. Dude is on reddit, every time I go on there I get adverts for data annotation roles paying people to work from home. There are loads of finance advice and resource on reddit too, but he cant find them. Yet he can magically find the subreddit to complain about his pregnant wife reaching for food.

This is why it’s important always to vote against any candidate that doesn’t support a living wage. Minimum wage was originally enacted so a family of four could survive on one full time job. Now working people can e starving. Vote for your own best interests.

Minimum wage was .25 hour when enacted and while it was set to stabilize the economy and added protections against child labor and extra pay for overtime, it was never truly a “living” wage nor was it intended to be.
